Vanguard Charitable to offer exclusive nonprofit research directory through partnership with GuideStar

September 19, 2017

Vanguard Charitable has launched the GuideStar National Nonprofit Directory, a comprehensive and easy-to-use charitable giving research tool featuring information on more than 2.6 million nonprofit organizations. Vanguard Charitable is the first donor-advised fund to offer this service to its donors, boosting their ability to make informed and thoughtful charitable giving decisions. The in-depth information included in the Nonprofit Directory, which would typically cost $1,000 annually per user, is available to Vanguard Charitable donors free of charge.

The Nonprofit Directory delivers a newly enhanced search function, including 12 sophisticated search filters that help donors find the nonprofits they are interested in, whether they are individual organizations, nonprofits serving a specific geographic location, or organizations that share similar missions or cause areas. Data is aggregated from the nonprofits themselves, the IRS, and additional trustworthy sources to produce a seamless, uniform profile for each individual nonprofit. Profiles have been redesigned to incorporate both narrative and dynamic visualization, and offer information on each organization’s mission, programs, financials, and operations.

“Collaborating with GuideStar to offer this tool reflects our longstanding commitment to donor education and strategic philanthropy.”

“Access to the Nonprofit Directory provides Vanguard Charitable donors with a streamlined way to evaluate nonprofits they might be interested in supporting and will facilitate their ability to grant money to charities with more conviction,” said Jane Greenfield, president of Vanguard Charitable. “Collaborating with GuideStar to offer this tool reflects our longstanding commitment to donor education and strategic philanthropy.”

GuideStar is the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations and a leader in spearheading transparency in the charitable giving sector. GuideStar assigns four transparency ratings based on the level of data that nonprofits have supplied to them, ranging from the basic information (Bronze level) to more comprehensive detail that includes quantitative program results (Platinum). Vanguard Charitable itself has earned a Platinum Seal of Transparency on GuideStar, indicating its own commitment to the highest level of nonprofit transparency.

“We are excited to work with Vanguard Charitable to strengthen the nonprofit intelligence it offers donors,” said Adrian Bordone, GuideStar’s vice president of strategic partnerships. “As our first partner to implement our new Nonprofit Directory, Vanguard Charitable is making it even easier for its donors to find nonprofits that align with their interests and to identify the organizations making the greatest impact.”

Through the Nonprofit Directory, available through each Vanguard Charitable donor’s account homepage, donors can access:

  • Detailed profiles of 1.6 million active nonprofits and historical information on 1 million former and merged nonprofits.
  • 12 comprehensive search filters to sort by geographic area, nonprofit size, transparency rating, cause area, affiliation type, and more.
  • Nonprofits’ public documents, such as IRS Form 990, balance sheets, officer and director compensation, revenue and expense data, audited financials, and IRS letters of determination.
  • Free, unlimited use of what would otherwise be a $1,000 annual subscription service.

The Nonprofit Directory, which can be launched directly from Vanguard Charitable donors’ homepages, puts information on 2.6 million nonprofits at their fingertips. (Vanguard Charitable, like GuideStar, is a cause-neutral organization. The search illustrated above is designed to show the Nonprofit Directory’s functionality and does not represent an endorsement of any of the pictured organizations.)

Nonprofit profiles include an overview alongside information on activity, financial disclosures, leadership structure, history, and more.
