To our partners in philanthropy:

As we look back on 2022, I can’t help but think of all the milestones we’ve reached together. On December 8, we celebrated Vanguard Charitable’s 25th anniversary. Just days before, we had granted our $15 billionth dollar to charity since inception, and just a few weeks later, we surpassed our previous all-time record for dollars granted in a single year. But that’s not all. We also established an industry partnership with PayPal with plans to start delivering donor grants electronically in 2023. And we added five new investments to our lineup to help you augment your giving strategy.

Sustainable giving remains a prominent theme for me. Our donors have a track record of giving in the short and long term, and you use our donor-advised fund’s power and reliability to follow through faithfully on your charitable plans. 2022 continued to prove that you, our donors, lead with generosity.

Despite external circumstances like inflation or a volatile stock market, you continued to grant at record levels across emerging and enduring needs. Your philanthropy has provided critical support to Ukraine humanitarian efforts and Hurricane Ian and Fiona disaster relief. You have also continued to provide vital funding for persistent issues like hunger, homelessness, and other causes personally important to you.

Our commitment to you is to continue making charitable giving easier and more flexible, all while helping you stay informed about your charitable impact. As your philanthropic partner, we’re enhancing our donor-advised fund to help grow your charitable potential while increasing efficiencies to lower costs. We aim to continue adding significant value to your philanthropic journey, helping you give more and with greater impact.

Your drive and determination to effect positive change continues to leave an impact on the world. Thank you for all that you do to make a difference year after year. It’s an honor to be alongside you throughout your charitable journey.

Fellow Donors,

When we first established Vanguard Charitable in 1997, it seemed like a simple idea. We had an ambitious mission, which was to increase philanthropy in the United States. While we hoped Vanguard Charitable would indeed make a difference to the nonprofit community, the reality has far exceeded our expectations. The most tangible manifestation of your generosity occurred in December, when we surpassed $15 billion in total grants to nonprofits since our founding.

2022 was an eventful year on many fronts. I’ll comment on three aspects of the year that stand out to me. First, I want to thank you for remaining consistent in your charitable giving. Despite volatile markets and tough external conditions, your consistent grantmaking helps charities deliver needed services in their respective communities. Even during a time of heightened uncertainty, you made your philanthropic intent clear—with a 5% increase in total grant dollars over 2021. A fun fact for you: Your granting in the past five years alone is equal to the total from our first 20 years.

Second, I’d like to thank you for the example you set for other philanthropists. The best examples are how together we’ve worked to put more decision-making power in the hands of the beneficiary charities through unrestricted grants, and how your consistent granting has highlighted the counter-cyclical nature of donor-advised funds to make an impact no matter the environment.

Finally, our team. The Vanguard Charitable team has, for 25 years, dedicated themselves to our donors and the causes they support, and they have done so selflessly and with excellence. 2022 was another year where they demonstrated those traits every day and I thank them on your behalf.

It's been a wonderful first quarter century for Vanguard Charitable and our donors. Together, we’ve made a real difference, and we’re eager to continue making a difference for years to come. Thank you for being with us on this journey, helping us to achieve significant milestones along the way, and, most important, making a huge difference to so many with your philanthropy.

Flexible and sustainable giving in hard times

Through charitable giving, our donors repeatedly provide the resources for nonprofits to enact change in their communities. We've seen that our donors put philanthropy at the forefront of their considerations regardless of external circumstances, including inflation and market volatility. And their actions speak volumes. For the sixth straight year, Vanguard Charitable donors have given at record numbers, and 2022 saw a 5% increase in total granting over last year.

Vanguard Charitable donors continued to make charitable giving a priority in 2022, and their ongoing commitment made it possible for them to help when it was needed most. As we look ahead, Vanguard Charitable will continue adapting to meet your philanthropic needs and help you achieve your charitable goals.

Consistency with recurring grants

Donor-advised fund (DAF) donors who make recurring grants offer nonprofits consistency and stability, allowing them to more comfortably plan and act in support of their missions. Recurring grants also help our donors; by choosing a pre-set date on an annual, semiannual, quarterly, or monthly basis, donors maintain important philanthropic commitments and free up their time and energy to focus on new giving initiatives.

Recurring grants are an easy way to grant from your DAF account, and many of our donors already employ them. We saw an 18% increase in the dollar amount of grants issued on a recurring schedule last year alone—demonstrating donors want their favorite charities to know they are there to help time and time again.

Tackling hunger and homelessness one grant at a time

Communities around the globe continue to struggle with pervasive hunger and homelessness, exacerbated post-COVID by inflation and disrupted supply chains. Vanguard Charitable’s Nonprofit Aid Visualizer™ (NAVi) allows you to search for organizations across the country addressing hunger and homelessness.
