Updated October 10, 2024
On Thursday evening, September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall on Florida’s Big Bend as a dangerous Category 4 storm. As it moved inland across the Southeastern United States, it triggered catastrophically-heavy rainfall. The results was damaging storm surges in Georgia and disastrous flooding across western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southwestern Virginia.
The death toll of this storm has surpassed 200 people, and the immediate relief required for those affected is still ongoing. This is particularly precarious as Florida recovers from a second storm, Hurricane Milton.
