Unrestricted giving and learnings from the industry:

Unrestricted giving—donations or grants that can be used for any purpose by the receiving charity—offers charities the ability to direct funds to their areas of greatest need. Unrestricted gifts allow nonprofits to cover expenses that can be difficult to fundraise.

This year, we surveyed 440 of our nonprofit partners and yielded many insights for our donors. When we asked what request nonprofit organizations would make of our donors, nearly 6 in 10 had the same response: More unrestricted giving.¹

Out of $1.78B granted by Vanguard Charitable donors in 2021, 50% was unrestricted. That’s up from 42% in 2020!

Fee reduction for high-performing ESG pools

A significant fee reduction has gone into effect for all three of our Values-driven Investments. These investment options (also known as ESG pools for their emphasis on environmental, social, and governance criteria) are among the fastest-growing pools in terms of their popularity over the past few years, allowing our donors to align their investments with their broader values.

Charitable giving rules to remain the same for the rest of 2021

A delay in the passage of the Build Back Better Act gives donors additional assurances that the charitable giving provisions they are familiar with will remain in place for the rest of the year. For donors who have been on the fence, the news offers encouragement to take action as soon as possible—especially with key year-end dates fast approaching.

Survey Says: Here's the one thing nonprofits want most this holiday season
